Mrs. Scotten's 8th Grade Language Arts Class - You Only Need to Do Two Things to Succeed in my Class: Show Up and Follow Up!

About Mrs. ScottenAbout Mrs. Scotten

Welcome to Language Arts! I am excited about working with you this year!

We have a lot to do to get you ready for high school, and I am confident you will be well-prepared when you finish my class. Since I will be learning a lot about you, I thought it only fair that you should know something about me.

Before I became a teacher, I worked making wooden puzzles for children. Our business is called "The Puzzle Man" (named after my husband) and we continue to make and sell our puzzles at craft fairs, through the mail, and on the internet.

I returned to school in 1992 to pursue my education. I majored in Spanish and minored in English at CSU Sacramento and received my B.A. in 1999. I was awarded a Rotary Club Scholarship and studied intensive Spanish in Mexico for three months in 2000. When I returned I entered the intern teacher program through Sacramento City Unified School District and earned credentials to teach both English and Spanish. In 2005 I was honored to receive the National Milken Educator Award.

When I'm not in the classroom or making puzzles, I love to work in my garden and flowerbeds. We love to eat fresh vegetables from our garden, and I also like to can them for eating in winter. I have lots of flowerbeds that make the farm look beautiful, and that keep me really busy. We have plenty of space so our two grandchildren, big family and lots of friends can play and relax when they come to visit.  We have a black lab named Buddy, who is part of the family, too.

My goals for teaching are several: to help student realize they CAN succeed in the academic world and that learning IS fun; to assist each student in doing his very best; to help create independent, critical thinking young adults who will be capable of leading us into the future. For you truly are our future!

So be assured that I am here to help you succeed. With our combined efforts, failure is not an option! I'm looking forward to a great year!
